We must not only govern for today's impact of the pandemic, but look to the future for opportunities with Federal stimulus funds and support. Mary praised the leadership from Skagit County Public Health department during this crisis and recognizes the need for a Commissioner to actively support their employees, inspiring expert staff to do their jobs well.
Government's investment in good infrastructure spurs private economic investment. Mary supports funding of County infrastructure such as roads, facilities, and fiber optic networks to help all of Skagit residents. Her experience in City government gives her a perspective of moving beyond 'studies' and delivering projects to our residents.
Mary has served on the Skagit Farm Bureau for many years and supported the Innovation Partnership Zone for value added agriculture resulting in mills, breweries, malting, and baking companies in Skagit County. Her unique support for the heritage of agriculture gives her a deep understanding of preservation of agriculture and an innovative path forward to building lasting economy around it.
Mary serves on the Home Trust of Skagit Board a non-profit that contributes to affordable housing for Skagit residents. She has been an outspoken advocate for the City of Mount Vernon affordable housing codes which offer incentives to developers to create permanently affordable units. She has real experience creating affordable housing!
As part of the Mount Vernon City Council, Mary has supported the collaboration with Skagit County Public Health for 3 years, voting for code to allow a permanent supportive housing project in Mount Vernon - scheduled to break ground in 2021. She publicly supports the Mount Vernon police social worker program that directly supports people experiencing homelessness in Skagit County.
Skagit County government can be more transparent through more accessible Commission meetings, the use of technology to expand access to the public, and open work sessions to our residents can have a greater voice in County governance.
